Mr. Marcus received a BA in Physics from Princeton University (1965) and a BFA and MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University Art School (1968). He is an internationally recognized authority on the design of user interfaces, interactive multimedia, and printing/publishing documents. Mr. Marcus has given tutorials at SIGGRAPH and SIGCHI conferences, and at seminars for businesses and academic institutions around the world.
He co-authored Human Factors and Typography for More Readable Programs (1990), The Cross-GUI Handbook (1994), Mobile TV: Customizing Content and Context (2010), LoCoS: International Visual Language (2013); and authored Graphic Design for Electronic Documents and User Interfaces (1992), The Past 100 Years of the Future: UX in Sci-Fi Movies and Television (2012), Fast Forward: Essays in Human-Computer Interaction/User-Experience Design (2014), and Mobile Persuasion Design (2015).
Mr. Marcus was the world’s first professional graphic designer to work full-time in computer graphics (1967), to program a desktop publishing system (for the AT&T Picturephone, 1969-71), to design virtual realities (1971-73), and to establish an independent computer-based graphic design firm (1982).
In 1992, he received the National Computer Graphics Association Industry Achievement Award for contributions to computer graphics. In 2008, the AIGA named him a Fellow; in 2009, CHI elected him to the CHI Academy.

Dominic Panholzer is not a software industry native. However, after receiving his Architecture degree from U.C. Berkeley, he soon discovered his calling as a UI designer. Moving to Austria at the turn of the century brought him to Hyperwave where he spent 12 years designing and specifying user interfaces. Gerd Helmreich, born in 1956, studied Industrial Design at the University of Wuppertal, Germany. After finishing his diploma in 1978 he started his career at Sedus Stoll as industrial designer in the area of office furniture. Since 1985, Gerd Helmreich was the responsible in-house designer at Siemens AG in the sectors of Medical and Industry. In 1997, the design department has been separated from the Siemens AG to form the independent sub-company designafairs. Gerd Helmreich became studio director in Erlangen, held a lectureship at the University of the Arts Berlin and was assigned responsible for various projects at University of Pforzheim. Matt Sharpe is the HCI Group Lead at NASA and doubles as the Deputy Manager of Data Integration for the vehicle replacing NASA’s Space Shuttle. Much of his experience has been focused on managing product teams and designing web products from inception through deployment for NASA’s manned space flight programs. The HCI group is tasked with helping NASA’s engineering teams make their information more efficiently utilized across the program lifecycle. Matthias Harbusch (50) works since 1999 in several user experience positions at SAP SE. He started his career at SAP in development in 1996. During the first big UX wave at SAP in 1999 he moved into the position of a user experience designer. The team size went up from 5 to 90 user experience specialists in 7 different locations around the world. Prof. Dr. Michael Burmester studied psychology at the University of Regensburg and Wuppertal in Germany. He started his career as a human-computer interaction researcher at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) in Stuttgart. In 1997, he joined Siemens Corporate Technology – User Interface Design as usability consultant and researcher for usability engineering. From 2000 to 2002, he was the head of the Munich office and the head of the Usability Engineering department of User Interface Design GmbH, a software and usability consultancy company. Since September 2002 he is professor for ergonomics and usability and head of the user experience research laboratory at the Stuttgart Media University (Hochschule der Medien, HdM). Furthermore, he is representative of the Information Experience and Design Research Group (IXL) and Vice Dean Research of the faculty information and communication. As project coordinator of the research project Design4Xperience, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, his research interests are to develop design strategies for positive user experience in work contexts.

Patrick Whitney is the Dean of the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, and is the Steelcase/Robert C. Pew Professor of Design. Professor Whitney has published and lectured throughout the world about ways of making technological innovations more humane, the link between design and business strategy, and methods of designing interactive communications and products. His writing is generally about new frameworks of design that respond to three transformations: linking insights about user experience to business strategy, the shift from mass-production to flexible production, and the shift from national markets to markets that are both global and “markets of one.” Whitney’s consulting focuses on helping a company adopt methods that develop insights about customer experience and align them with the company’s strategy. He conducts executive workshops for numerous corporations and organizations. These have included Aetna, BP, Lenovo, McDonald’s, Procter & Gamble, Steelcase, Texas Instruments, Zebra Technologies, and departments of the governments of Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Japan, and the UK. Business Week has featured professor Whitney as a ‘design visionary’ for bringing together design and business, Forbes named him as one of six members of the ‘E-Gang’ for his work in human centered design, and Fast Company has identified him as a ‘master of design’ for his leadership in the design field of linking the creation of value for users and economic value for companies. In addition to speaking at major design conferences throughout the world, he speaks at conferences on public policy and other fields outside of design. These include China Daily’s CEO Summits, executive briefings to the Confederation of Indian Industries, the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit, the 50th anniversary of the Aspen Institute, and the TED conference. He is the principal investigator of several research projects at the Institute of Design, including Global Companies in Local Markets, Design for the Base of the Pyramid, and Schools in the Digital Age. His work has received support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Joyce Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Steelcase Foundation and numerous corporations.
Whitney has been on the jury of many award programs, including the U.S. Presidential Design Awards. He was a member of the White House Council on Design. In 1978 he was program chairman for the first major meeting addressing design evaluation from the user’s perspective at the U.S. Conference of the International Council on Graphic Design Associations (ICOGRADA). Professor Whitney was president of the American Center for Design (ACD) and served as editor of Design Journal, its annual publication. He is on several advisory boards in the U.S. and abroad and is a trustee of the Global Heritage Fund.

Raised in Lebanon, Ralph hails from a family of industrialists. From a very young age
itself, he was surrounded by entrepreneurship and family businesses spreading around
the region in several sectors of the industry.
With a background in economics, Ralph pursued a degree in Design at the Lebanese
American University, continuing his higher education in England. There, he studied
Automotive Design at the prestigious Coventry University School of Art and Design
and graduated with honors.
Ralph worked on several award-winning concepts across Europe, gaining excellent
access into the automotive world and industry. His vision, designs and leadership
were recognized through various awards he received during this time such as the

Robert Pucher is a computer science professor and head of the department of computer science at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien. He is responsible for the bachelor´s program Computer Science and for the master´s program Software Engineering. Robert Pucher held management positions for software development in small and large companies. Among his main responsibilities was the management of development and implementation for large software projects. Since 1998 he is on permanent tenure as at the University of Applied Sciences, Technikum Wien. In 2003 Robert Pucher was appointed as head of the bachelor´s degree program “Computer Science” and as of 2006 he is heading the master’s degree program “Software Engineering”. Robert Pucher, native from Austria holds a Doctoral Degree from the University of Technology in Graz, Austria and a Diplomingenieur Degree in “Electronics and Communications” from the same University. Robert founded the usability lab at the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien and initiated a focus on usability engineering education in various fields of the University. Silvia is founder, CEO and lead experience designer at the “Institute of Software Ergonomics and Usability” (www.usability.ch). During her career she researched, designed and evaluated various experiences on various devices in different domains. As many in the field Silvia was working as a researcher, usability tester, interaction designer, requirements engineer, usability engineer and UX designer. From 2009 – 2011 Silvia was President of the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA International) where she was part of the international board of directors since 2006. Silvia is also active in the ACM SIGCHI community, where she was a Student Design Competition Judge in 2007 and 2008. Since many years Silvia is an invited lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences in Switzerland where she teaches usability, UX, interaction design, user interface design and design thinking strategies. Silvia speaks at various events throughout the year. She holds a BsC (Hons) and a Master’s degree in psychology and travels the world since she is 18. Tarana has a masters in design technology from Tisch School of Arts (Interactive Telecommunications Program), New York University. In the following years he took over more and more responsibilities in paint- and body-operations. He was part in numerous projects together with Chrysler, Mercedes Benz / AMG, Saab, BMW / Mini, Peugeot and Aston Martin.
