Safety-critical environment is not only a large technological but also a human centric system completely dependent on human’s ability, skills, experience and judgment in their operating environments. Understanding humans in operation of those is crucial to be able to provide 24/7 high reliable performance.
Safety-related design comprises all aspects of safe interaction and communication between human users and their equipment over human-machine interfaces, combined with maximum performance levels. As any other design work, it starts with definitions of user groups, overall goals and means for their achievement, as well as with task analyses, in order to have a solid basis for user requirements and system specifications. The importance of the safety goals, however, dominates all others but at the same time incorporates the user expectation of how interface design should look, feel, function and respond.
