Technology is innovating at a pace faster than light, and at times being tested in the wild before they’ve been properly vetted in the lab or given consideration for how they might impact social norms, the job market our safety and our health.
Artificial intelligence in particular has awesome and terrifying potential. There are already some great examples of AI run amok where carefully crafted systems act in ways their developers never anticipated.
As UX professionals we are in a position to influence considerations and intentions that go into product conception and development. We have a great opportunity and responsibility to help our teams think critically about the consequences of our actions and resulting innovations. Applying a STEEPLE (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political, Legal and Ethical) framework to the end to end design process is one way to accomplish this.
