Benedikt Lehnert is the Chief Design Officer at SAP leading the evolution of a unified customer experience that takes enterprise software to the next level.
Previous to this, Benedikt was the Director of Product Design for Microsoft’s Fluent, Office, Fluid and M365 Experiences, leading the evolution of Microsoft’s design language and system, and delivering cross-platform productivity services across the company’s wide range of products. Before that, as Director of Product Design for Outlook, Benedikt led an interdisciplinary team of designers and researchers across Redmond, New York City, San Francisco, Vancouver, Berlin and Hyderabad. He then led the creation and execution of M365 Mobile design strategy to align Microsoft‘s flagship mobile apps across Android and iOS, including Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams and more.
Benedikt joined Microsoft in 2015 through the acquisition of Wunderlist, the world’s most loved cross-platform productivity app, where he was the Chief Design Officer. He joined the Berlin-based startup in 2012 when the company had only 9 employees and has been the driving force behind winning the hearts and minds of millions people across the globe by delivering a beautiful product that is highly functional, yet incredibly simple.
During his 4 years a Wunderlist he scaled the product team to 70 people, helped raise funding from world-renowned investors such as Atomico and Sequoia Capital, making Wunderlist the first ever investment in a German startup by the legendary Silicon Valley firm.
Benedikt’s work is grounded in the belief that in the drastically changing 21st century, experience-led companies are the more successful businesses, which has led to Wunderlist secure numerous awards and still a cult-like following, and has driven his transformational work at Microsoft.
Benedikt is also the author of Typoguide, an international keynote speaker and angel investor in design-driven startups. His award-winning work has been featured in publications around the world.
Benedikt was born in a small town in Saarland, Germany where he grew up in a family of craftspeople shaping his appreciation for things that have purpose and are well-made. In 2011, he then moved to Berlin to help build and shape the now thriving tech startup community. Today, Benedikt lives with his wife Cat Noone and daughter Emma in Greystones, Ireland and Princeton, NJ.
