The Value of UX

Javier Andrés Bargas-Avila

In the interview, Javier, a UX coach and keynote speaker, emphasizes that the core value of UX is helping product development teams focus on real problems rather than jumping straight to solutions or technologies. While many associate UX with creating delightful, attractive, and user-friendly products, Xavier argues that these are secondary outcomes. The true strength of UX lies in its methods and tools for identifying and framing problems—whether they are user, business, or engineering problems. He highlights the current trend in AI adoption as an example of misplaced focus: many teams are starting with the technology (“how can we use AI?”) instead of asking which problems truly need solving. This leads to purposeless products like AI chatbots that serve no real need. Instead, UX guides teams to ground development in genuine problems first, then explore technologies (like AI) only if they meaningfully address those needs. Ultimately, Javier concludes that UX’s purpose is not just to make things look and feel good but to ensure problem-solving is at the heart of product development, with delight and usability supporting that mission.

Debunking misconceptions with research-driven thinking · Career coach

After 14 years at Google, I’ve experienced how fast this industry moves. It can be thrilling, but also confusing, overwhelming, even cruel. I’ve seen brilliant people burned out, pushed aside, or made to feel like they don’t belong. I’ve lived some of that myself.

I’ve built and led UX teams across Cloud, Ads, YouTube, and Play. I’ve published over 30 articles and delivered over 150 talks globally. I am an active contributor to the UX community and lecture at both the University of Basel and the University of Applied Sciences in Olten.

In 2025, I co-founded Astrolabium with Nina Weber. We turned our decades of experience at Google and in UX leadership into a coaching and training space for UXers who want to grow with integrity, not pressure. We believe in honest mentorship, thoughtful strategy, and careers built on values, not fear.

Today, I support UX professionals of all levels who are facing change – layoffs, toxic work environments, career crossroads.
